Why Tottenham must avoid re-signing Gareth Bale at all costs

When Gareth Bale left Tottenham Hotspur to join Real Madrid, it evoked mixed emotions among scores of fans worldwide. Few were happy about his progress and all that but many were livid at his choice to leave the club and move on.

At the time, Bale was enjoying his career and development with Spurs and he occupied a stature similar to that of Harry Kane’s. However, a lot of things have changed since then and there have been reports suggesting that the North London side could sign Bale again this summer.

Daniel Levy is known for a lot of things but he is majorly recognised as a shrewd owner. And when one understands the terms of Bale’s £86m sale, it does prove that Levy is a very smart man. While sanctioning his sale to Real, the Spurs owner included a clause which specifies that the Lilywhites will get an upper-hand at re-signing Bale, should the option ever arise in the future. And now, it does seem like Mauricio Pochettino could make an attempt to bring him back.

But will that be a wise move?

As mentioned earlier, a lot of things have changed since Bale moved to Real Madrid. The player’s form has taken a severe dip and he is merely a shadow of the player he used to be during his time in the Premier League.

Frequent injuries have caused a dent in his development and even until recently, the player has been in-and-out of fitness issues. Even when he is on the field, his displays are lacklustre and it has been a while since he put in a game-changing performance.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have also not had the best of seasons so far but in Harry Kane, they have a prolific goalscoring machine. The sensational Englishman has played a pivotal role for Spurs this term and there seems to be no end to his brilliance.

Bale and Kane play different roles, technically, but when you have such a player at hand, it does not make sense for the club to splash money on bringing Bale back.

Once known for his highly-energetic and creative displays coupled with some menacing runs, Bale is now far from the kind of player he used to be. Of course, a change in environment could work wonders for him but joining a club other than Tottenham is likely to yield better results for the 28-year-old Welshman.
