Mauricio Pochettino is yet to unveil his first signing this summer but has been busily scouting some of the finest players in Europe for a move this summer. The Argentine might lose a couple of first team stars in the transfer window and so he is adamant to make some smart additions to his squad, to try and take them all the way next season. One player who might help get them there is Max Meyer.

The German starlet is a long-term transfer target for the English side, who have been tracking him for more than a year now. It is reported that the 21-year old is unhappy with his situation at Schalke and is ready for an exit this summer. And according to the Sun, Meyer is now a top priority transfer target for Pochettino this summer.

The attacker would have cost the Spurs around £30m last summer but the report suggests that the manager can land the playmaker for just around £17.5m this summer. But is he what Tottenham need?

For more than a year now, Spurs have used raw talent, in a well-organised system under Pochettino to derive some important results. But they have time and again fallen short of just what is required when it matters the most.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Eric Dier, and Dele Alli, Tottenham already have a team built for the future and though it is a model that has been working for Pochettino, the manager should now look to add some established stars to his first team, to help them take the next step.

Max Meyer is a versatile attacker with decent touch and vision with the ball at his feet. He is strong for a 21-year old and is capable of holding up the play in the final third. With decent skill and passing accuracy, he can create chances at will and on his day, is a match winner.

However, he scored just 2 goals and 5 assists in 39 games in all competitions last season and his inconsistency is pushing him out of the scene in the international arena. Meyer has 122 league appearances and 4 national appearances to his name, and has established himself in Europe. But he is yet to turn into a star that a top European club can rely upon and is just not what the Spurs need at the moment.

If the Spurs are to genuinely challenge for the title, they should look for star players and not the German. There are bigger players available in the market and signing them would send a clear message of intent to their rivals.
