West Ham United

Forget it Pellegrini – West Ham would be better off avoiding this 28-year-old Frenchman and here’s why

West Ham United opinion: Should West Ham sign Yann M’Vila?

According to a report from French publication GFFN, West Ham United have made a concrete approach to sign former Sunderland midfielder Yann M’Vila in the summer. The Frenchman is now playing for Ligue 1 side St Etienne, for whom he has been a regular this season.

The report reveals that the 28-year-old’s decision will be dependent on St Etienne manager Jean-Louis Gasset, whose contract with the club expires at the end of the season.

West Ham, on the other hand, need reinforcements in midfield in the summer. The Hammers’ signing of Jack Wilshere has been a failure so far, due to the former Arsenal man’s injury troubles. Skipper Mark Noble is on the wrong side of 30 and Pedro Obiang has failed to deliver consistently.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side could also lose Declan Rice, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, with Manchester United and Manchester City both keen on the 20-year-old’s signature.

However, West Ham signing Yann M’Vila would be a massive gamble. The Frenchman is definitely not what the Hammers need, at this time. Big things were expected of M’Villa, but the former Rennes man has failed to live up to his potential.

The Frenchman moved from Rennes to Russian side Rubin Kazan in 2013, but his time in the Russian League turned out to be a disappointment. M’Vila also had a short stint in the Premier League with Sunderland in the 2015-16  season. The Black Cats were relegated from the English top-flight in that season.

M’Vila missed just one game for Sunderland that season. He showed glimpses of his brilliance but ultimately failed to live up to the hype. He finished the campaign with just 1 goal and 5 assists.

Conclusion

M’Vila would be a strange move for the Hammers, who already have midfielders of a similar profile. The Hammers should bring back Edimilson Fernandes, who is onloan in the Serie-A, instead of signing M’Vila.

Manuel Pellegrini should abort his interest in Yann M’Vila and focus on bringing in someone younger and more promising in the summer.
