Forget Drinkwater – 3 reasons why this £35m midfield beast could be a serious upgrade on the Englishman

Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri is on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea. The managerial situation at Chelsea remains uncertain, and it would be interesting to see if the Blues push for a deal for Seri early in the summer transfer window.

Assuming Chelsea manage to sign Seri, who has a £35m release clause, here’s why he would prove to be an upgrade over Danny Drinkwater.

Seri – A serious upgrade on Drinkwater

When compared to Drinkwater, Seri is a far superior footballer in terms of technique, flair, and passing. The Nice midfielder has the ability to produce magic at any moment when he has the ball at his feet.

Danny Drinkwater

Seri thrives on threading through balls to his team-mates. He averaged 2.1 key passes per game in Ligue 1 last season, which is far superior to Drinkwater’s 0.4 key passes per game in the Premier League last term.

Another area where Seri beats Drinkwater hands down is while taking on players. The 26-year-old Ivorian has the ability to beat a man while venturing forward as he made 1.2 dribbles per game last season. Drinkwater, on the other hand, is much more static and averaged just 0.3 dribbles per game last season.

If Chelsea manage to sign Seri in the summer, it’s safe to say that the Blues will be getting a player, who is much better than Drinkwater as the stats showed.

Why Drinkwater should be offloaded

The signing of Drinkwater from Leicester City last summer never really made much sense and it has proved to a wrong decision as the midfielder struggled to feature regularly for the Stamford Bridge outfit last season. He managed to start just five Premier League games for the Blues in the 2017/18 campaign.

Drinkwater is naturally a defensive midfielder, who has an eye for a long pass. But with N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko already at the club, Chelsea don’t really need the services of the former Leicester star. He should be sold in the summer to make way for new signings.
