Food For Thought – The One Key Position That Wolves Should Strengthen In January To Win The League

Wolverhampton Wanderers are steamrollering their way to the Championship title and will be top-10 candidates in the Premier League next season. They spent big this season on the likes of Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, Leo Bonatini, Barry Douglas, Willy Boly and others but their success is not just about the money they’ve spent.

Who would have predicted Matt Doherty performing so well as an attacking right wing-back or especially that Conor Coady would end up being the crucial central figure in Nuno Santo’s back three? They have been very solid indeed, but are not naïve and know that additions to the squad may be needed in order to ensure that nothing goes wrong in the second half of the campaign.

It’s pretty common knowledge that the club is looking to bring in another striker as cover for Bonatini with Sunderland’s star man Lewis Grabban looking like the one they want, though he will first need to be recalled by Bournemouth from his loan.

Barry Douglas is their one recognised senior left wing-back, though youngster Ruben Vinagre will need game time in order to get the experience he needs and so another player out there is not expected to be bought.

Additions Needed In The Heart Of The Park

There is already plenty of competition for places in the back three and on the wings, meaning the position they need to strengthen in January is probably the central midfield position.

With Edwards sold and Ben Marshall out of favour, the two central roles have been entirely owned by Romain Saiss and Ruben Neves and something could go wrong with either of them at any time.

Furthermore, reports emerged out of Morocco recently that Liverpool were looking to bring Saiss in the transfer window. This is something I doubt as I don’t think he’s the best midfielder at Wolves, let alone being capable of making a difference at Anfield.

If I’m wrong, though, Saiss would need to be replaced and if I’m right then a back-up at least will be required as injuries and especially suspensions become a factor as the season wears on.

On top of this, it can’t be forgotten that Neves is a youngster and may need to be rested at some stage or else Wolves may run the risk of burning out what is a supreme talent.
