Premier League opinion: Five contenders for goal of the season

What a stunning season it has been in the Premier League. There is a race to the title, a race for a top four place, a race for the top six spots, a race to the final Europa league spot and even a relegation battle.

However, one thing remains constant in the league and that is goals. The bread and butter of football, goals define the beautiful game as we know it. There have been a few stunners, brilliant team goals and exquisite strikes from more than a few sources.

Picking the best is a very tough job, but that being said, here are five contenders for the Premier League goal of the season.

Andros Townsend: Crystal Palace vs Manchester City

This came out of absolutely no-where. Patrick Van Aanholt sent a great cross in from a free-kick around 40-odd yards out into the Manchester City box.

But the Cityzens’ dominance meant that it was defended well first by John Stones and then cleared by Bernardo Silva.

However, the Portuguese headed the ball out and it flew out to the 30-yard mark, with the ball falling in a near-perfect arch.

That may have played a part in what was about to come. Andros Townsend, who was rather invisible for most of the first half, had a controlled swing at the ball.

It connected perfectly with his left foot and flew with purpose and intent past the out-stretched arm of Ederson and into the Manchester City goal for a 2-1 lead to Crystal Palace.

Aaron Ramsey: Arsenal vs Fulham

Arsenal under Arsene Wenger became known as the beautiful goalscorers, thanks to a rather incredible blend of technically gifted players. This one, however, is among the best ones but it came under a team managed by Unai Emery.

Substitute Aaron Ramsey got the ball inside his own half, fired a pass to Alexandre Lacazette who returned it to him.

The Welshman ran over, scooped it over an on-rushing Fulham defender and the ball flew towards Lacazette. The Frenchman lofted it to Bellerin, who back-heeled it to Ramsey who’d continued his run.

The Welshman produced an outrageous doubleheader to Mkhitaryan, who played it through to Aubameyang. It’s here that the moment capitulated, with the Gabonese playing a superb cross towards Ramsey, who back-flicked it into the net.

Callum Wilson: Bournemouth vs West Ham

The second game of the season and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson had the audacity to do this to poor West Ham United. While the assist may be credited to Steve Cook, this goal was all Callum Wilson and it shows why he’s so highly rated at the Vitality Stadium.

Picking up the ball just inside the West Ham half, the 27-year-old danced his way past four Hammers defenders. Not even challenges from both Fabian Balbuena and Pablo Zabeleta could stop the striker, before he rolled it under Lukasz Fabianski.

Everything he had at his disposal was on show in a rather stunning solo effort. But he still missed out on the goal of the month to Newcastle United star Fabian Schar’s long-range effort.

Son Heung-Min: Tottenham vs Chelsea

Another superb solo goal, the South Korean should be on the shortlist for the Player of the Year final cut and this effort shows exactly why. On the counter-attack, Dele Alli swept the ball towards Son and he picked it up from the half-way line.

Son proceeded to outpace and trick Jorginho but was pushed towards the corner flag. Yet, that failed to faze the 25-year-old and he effortlessly danced past both David Luiz and the Italian midfielder before bearing down on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Nothing seemed to stop him and despite being the only one in the Chelsea box amongst six Chelsea players, Son Heung-Min slotted it coolly past Arrizabalaga.

Sergio Aguero: Manchester City vs Chelsea

The fact that he missed a sitter just minutes before this goal didn’t seem to faze the Argentiean on the way to his second hattrick in as many games. 1-0 down and Chelsea still had chance, especially after Aguero missed an open chance.

However, the 29-year-old can punish you if given another chance and Chelsea learnt it the hard way. Handed the ball by Oleksandar Zinchenko, Aguero outmuscled Jorginho and despite being surrounded by four Chelsea players, he let one fly from just inside 25 yards.

The fact that it was Aguero’s right boot connecting with the ball meant that it flew with absolute venom towards the goal, swerving and dipping along the way.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
