Tottenham came from behind to thrash Southampton 4-1 at the St. Mary’s on Wednesday. The Saints went ahead just 69 seconds into the game from a Virgil van Dijk header and Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked shell-shocked for the early part of the game with the home team dominating proceedings. However, against the run of play, Dele Alli popped in to equalize for the North Londoners with a lovely header and Spurs never looked back after that.
Harry Kane then put Spurs ahead with a powerful header after the restart, before missing a penalty. But that miss did not cost Spurs as substitute Son Heung-Min made it 3-1 before Alli compounded the home side’s misery with a fourth goal in the 87th minute.
Spurs continue to breathe down the neck of Arsenal with the win, with just one point separating the two teams with the Gunners occupying the fourth spot in the table. In what was an emphatic win for Pochettino’s men, we see how each player fared on the evening:
Hugo Lloris – 6
Looked shaky on a couple of occasions when he came out for the ball. Could not do much for the goal, and was mostly untested for large parts of the game.
Kyle Walker – 6
Dealt well with the threat of Sofiane Boufal on the right side. Got forward well, especially after Redmond’s sending off. Got himself booked for a foul on Ryan Bertrand and will miss their next game.
Eric Dier – 7
Looks to be growing into the role of centre-back. Was strong in the air and distributed well from the back. Started many moves for the visitors from deep.
Jan Vertonghen – 6
Was caught out by Van Dijk for the opening goal. Grew into the game after that though and looked confident throughout, negating the threat of Jay Rodriguez completely.
Danny Rose – 8
Another Man-of-the-Match display by the full-back. Drove Spurs forward at every instance possible and defended resolutely. Capped off an excellent night with a lovely assist for Alli’s second goal.
Victor Wanyama – 7
A dominant display by the midfielder against his former employers. Hardly put a foot wrong in midfield and forged an excellent partnership alongside Dembele.
Mousa Dembele – 7
Provides muscle and energy in the middle of the park. Picked up a booking early into the game that may have held him back a little, but offered great control from the midfield, before being replaced by Harry Winks.
Christian Eriksen – 7
Constant thorn for the Southampton defence with his intelligent movement. Came close to scoring in the second-half with his powerful shot bouncing off the upright. Set Son on his way, albeit via a deflection, for the third goal for Spurs.
Dele Alli – 8
Scored a smart header in the first half to get Spurs back into the game. The former MK Dons man ran hard and caused troubles for the Saints defence throughout the night. Won a penalty in the second half which was spurned by Harry Kane, but finished the night with a well-taken goal for his second, late in the game.
Moussa Sissoko – 6
Probably one of his better displays since making the move to London. Yet to hit his peak but looked to be on the right path with a strong showing. He sent Alli through on goal with a lovely ball, that led to the penalty decision. Replaced by Son in the 73rd minute.
Harry Kane – 6
A mixed outing for the Spurs talisman. Put his team ahead with a powerful header early in the second period but blasted over from the spot.
Son Heung-Min – 7
Replaced Sissoko in the second half and looked bright. Was full of running and took his goal with aplomb to seal the game for Spurs.
Harry Winks – NA
Came on in the 81st minute for Dembele.
Vincent Janssen – NA
On the pitch for only two minutes after replacing Harry Kane late in the game.
