Everton Opinion: Would Danny Drinkwater be a good fit for the Toffees?

Danny Drinkwater has become a forgotten man at Chelsea and it doesn’t seem like it is going to get any better for him with Maurizio Sarri at the helm.

It has been a season to forget for the 28-year-old as he has made just one substitute appearance so far, which was in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City before the start of the season, and it barely lasted 30 minutes on the pitch.

Danny Drinkwater signed for Chelsea from Leicester City in the summer of 2017 for £35m and made 22 appearances in his debut season at Stamford Bridge. Without a single appearance this season, the midfielder’s time might be coming to an end in the summer as he needs to leave the Blues to reignite his career.

With that in mind, Everton should make a move for the Chelsea outcast ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Everton have been utterly inconsistent under Marco Silva, with the Portuguese tactician failing to get the right balance in his team for large parts of the season.

Silva was expected to make the Toffees play an attractive, dynamic brand of football and while there have been glimpses of it, the Merseysiders have struggled overall and currently find themselves at 10^th place in the table.

A finish inside the top eight would mean a successful season for Everton now but come the summer transfer window, Silva will have some big decisions to make. One of them should be to sign a midfielder following Idrissa Gueye’s comments last month after Everton turned down a £25million bid from PSG in January.

Drinkwater would fit the bill perfectly at Everton. A technically-gifted midfielder, the 28-year-old thrives in a double-pivot and could be the like-to-like replacement for Gueye.

Capable of reading the game well, the former Manchester United trainee’s creativity and passing range from the middle of the park can split any team to shreds. The Englishman is quick and an accomplished dribbler of the ball but tends to keep things simple.

Drinkwater never hesitates to stick out a foot to halt the opposition from advancing, and his tenacity and industry would help the Toffees tick.
