Everton Opinion: Why Everton should sign Terence Kongolo in the summer?

The January transfer window proved to be a quiet one for Everton, like many Premier League clubs, seemingly accepting that it is not easy to find value-for-money signings midway through the campaign. But it seems inevitable that a new defender will be at top of Marco Silva’s wishlist heading into the summer.

Everton have been utterly poor defensively under Silva, with the team conceding 39 goals in 27 league games. Michael Keane is the only defender to come out with some credit but what he has lacked all this campaign is a reliable partner.

Silva spent heavily on Yerry Mina and signed Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan from Chelsea ahead of the start of the season. Both Mina and Zouma arrived at the Goodison Park amidst a lot of fanfare but neither of them have managed to impress, especially the former.

Mina missed the start of the 2018/19 Premier League season due to injury. However, he eventually made his league debut in November and became a regular in the Everton backline. Unfortunately, the Colombian has suffered another injury that has seen him miss the last four league games.

Zouma, on the other hand, has been Keane’s preferred partner at the heart of Everton defence but any chances of Silva signing the Frenchman on a permanent basis this summer have surely ended following Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban from FIFA.

Without Zouma next season, though, if Chelsea choose to keep him, Silva should definitely sign another defender in the summer. With that in mind, Everton must go all out to bag the signature of Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo.

Huddersfield Town are bottom of the table and have kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League games. That itself tells how poor the Terriers have been defensively and why are almost certain to play in the Championship next season, lest Jan Siewert manages to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

Just like Town’s other defenders, Terence Kongolo has also struggled this season but one cannot deny there is a lot of potential in him and the quality he possesses.

The Dutchman is a solid, physically imposing and no-nonsense defender who can also play out from the back. He is a versatile player, capable of doing a good job at left-back or left wing-back as well.

Conclusion

Under Marco Silva, Kongolo could iron out the little flaws in his game and develop into a reliable defender. He is 25 and has a long way to go before he realizes his true potential.
