Sheffield United Opinion – Billy Sharp getting new contract is a no-brainer

According to a report in Sky Sports, Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Bramall Lane until 2021. The 33-year-old will cross his 35th birthday with the Blades, effectively committing the rest of his career to the club.

United are looking to end their 12-year wait of playing Premier League football. They are currently second in the table, two points behind leaders Norwich City and are in contention to get automatic promotion.

Sharp has made a significant contribution so far and if the Blades are to play top-flight football next season, the veteran could be their key player up front.

Billy Sharp

The former Leeds United striker has scored 22 goals in 30 league appearances so far, with a rate of over 0.70 goals per game. It shows he is always expected to score a goal whenever he steps onto the field.

Season stats analysis

In terms of what Sharp offers to the team apart from his goals is pretty impressive, to say the least. His physicality allows him to hold the ball against sufficient pressure from the centre-backs, and then do lay-offs for the runners that are going beyond the last line.

He is pretty good in the air, making him a genuine threat from set-pieces, and also help the team in defending them. Apart from the 22 goals he has scored this season, he has provided two assists, adjoining with the key pass rate of 0.9.

The 33-year-old attempts 2.1 shots per game on an average, which signifies his willingness to test the opposition goalkeeper as much as possible. (Whoscored.com)

Conclusion

All in all, Sharp has done more than enough, even at the age of 33 to warrant a new deal at Sheffield United. Currently, he is leading their charge to end the top-flight wait, and if the Blades are to be successful in the next two seasons, the Englishman will be at the heart of it.
