Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should avoid buying Fabian Delph?

According to a report from The Sun, Everton are plotting a move for Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph.

The England international, 29, has struggled to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s side in recent seasons, making just 11 Premier League outings last term. He has fallen even further down the pecking order following the arrival of Rodri from Atletico Madrid.

Delph is entering the final year of his contract at City and due to a lack of regular first-team football has also attracted interest from Turkish side Galatasaray. But the 29-year-old prefers to play in England and continue being a part of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.

With that in mind, should Everton hand the English midfielder a Premier League lifeline?

No, they shouldn’t. The Toffees are pushing for European football ahead of the new campaign, and in order to that, they need to add more quality to their squad. Marco Silva has made two signings in the summer so far, with the latest being Andre Gomes from Barcelona.

Gomes enjoyed a strong season-long spell at Goodison Park which prompted Silva to make his deal permanent. The Portuguese international’s arrival has boosted Everton’s midfield options, but the Merseyside outfit still need more depth in that department.

A player of Delph’s quality and top-flight experience may tempt Silva into making a move for him. The England international is a versatile player, and can fill in at left-back if needed, another area where the Toffees might need reinforcements considering Leighton Baines, despite signing a one-year extension with the club, has entered the twilight of his career.

The ex-Aston Villa man has been a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad in recent years. Added with that, Delph’s winning mentality could come handy for Silva’s side. However, Everton should take a step back by seeing the £16m price tag. The midfielder will turn 30 next season and he does not have a sell-on value.

Silva and Marcel Brands are working hard to make Everton an exciting team, filled with young talents. Brands prefers to bring in younger talent and the signing of Delph would go against his policy, even though the England international’s experience at the highest level makes him a very attractive potential recruit.

Verdict

Without any second thoughts, Everton should stay away from City’s Delph.
