Newcastle United opinion: The Magpies should hold onto Sean Longstaff

Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff has been linked with a move to Manchester United all summer. Newcastle are at a very pivotal moment in the club’s future, having already lost their manager Rafael Benitez and one of their star players in Ayoze Perez.

It is one of the most important summers in Newcastle’s recent history and losing one of their own in Sean Longstaff would be a real dagger in the hearts of the Magpies faithful.

Manchester United have already bought in the likes of Daniel James from Swansea and Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Crystal Palace and Sean Longstaff would definitely show signs of a new direction taken by the club.

All of the players mentioned above share some similarities. They’re all British for starters, younger than 23 and they all have a bit of bite and hunger from what we’ve seen on the pitch. They’re all team players.

Solskjaer has indicated that he wants to set a new identity at the club with younger and hungrier players who go on to become stars and that will worry Newcastle fans.

Longstaff was a breath of fresh air for the St. James’ Park faithful in the second half of last season’s campaign. He made 9 appearances, scoring 2 goals but it was more than just his goals that have got everyone’s attention.

His discipline in games against Manchester City and Wolves showcased all of his attributes. His positioning, his passing ability with both feet and his calmness in possession has seen him being compared to another Geordie in Michael Carrick by Rafa Benitez.

Longstaff has been on loan to the likes of Kilmarnock and Blackpool and has really had to earn his place in the first-team under Rafa Benitez and he’s taken his chances with both hands. Newcastle can’t afford to lose another potential starter having already lost some important figures in the dressing room.

Longstaff has a very bright future for the Magpies and could potentially even see himself become a captain of the side one day. He’s only just managed to make it into the top-tier and a big move like this might’ve come a little too early in his career. He should stay at Newcastle for at least one more year ahead of a very difficult season.

The Magpies will almost certainly be in a relegation battle next season, hence, it is important that they hold onto Sean Longstaff.
