According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Everton are interested in signing AC Milan’s Cristian Zapata in the summer but they are set to face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Watford.
The Colombian defender’s contract with the Serie A giants is said to expire at the end of this season and the Toffees, as well as Watford, are looking to bag him on a free transfer before the start of next season.
Marco Silva’s side ended the season strongly, losing just twice in their last 10 games. Their poor early season form cost them a place in the top seven but the Toffees should take the positives from their impressive second half.
Everton have a solid squad which helped them do well against the big boys last season but there will be concern about their defence. Kurt Zouma’s loan deal from Chelsea has expired and his future is still in the air, especially due to the Blues’ transfer ban.
Yerry Mina has struggled throughout with injuries, while skipper Phil Jagielka who is 36 now, could leave the club once his contract expires next month.
Michael Keane could well be the only reliable centre-half at Marco Silva’s disposal next season, which makes the need for reinforcements highly important in the summer.
However, reports of Everton’s interest in Cristian Zapata comes in as a huge surprise and signing the Colombian doesn’t really make much sense. Zapata is no doubt a fine centre-half, who has done really well for Milan over the last six years, and him coming in for free will be a huge bonus.
The Colombian is vastly experienced, having played at the top-level for over 8 years now but at 32 years of age, he would be a massive gamble for the Toffees. As much as Everton need an experienced centre-back, an ageing one will be of very little help in the coming years.
Despite having a fairly young squad, Everton already have players with good experience, with the likes of Lucas Digne, Idrissa Gueye and Gylfi Sigurdsson all being able leaders.
Zapata will not add anything new to this Toffees squad and they should reconsider their interest in him in the coming weeks.

Everton will unnecessarily be adding to their wage bill if they sign Cristian Zapata in the summer. The Colombian, irrespective of his quality, will bring nothing new to Goodison in the summer and Everton should not pursue their reported interest.
