Tottenham Hotspur rounded up a fantastic week with a 1-0 win over Burnley at Wembley to cement their third position in the table. Christian Eriksen scored the only goal in stoppage time to break the Clarets’ heart, gifting the home team a scrappy win in tough rainy conditions.
When the added time was raised in the 90th minute, it looked like the away side will get a point. However, substitute Christian Eriksen stepped up with a high shot to beat Joe Hart. The Danish was well found by striker Harry Kane, who anticipated the former’s position to have a pop at the goal.
Burnley were fighting on for most of the game, with keeper Joe Hart in great form – not for the first time this season. The ex-England No. 1 came up with a world-class save to deny Erik Lamela.
The home side did fail to create a bunch of clear-cut chances, partly crediting to how well Sean Dyche’s men defended. Mauricio Pochettino’s men were handed easy possession in the midfield but most of their attacks broke down in and around the edge of the box, with the Clarets camping their stay within the edge of the 18-yard area.
At the end of the day, it was a substitute Eriksen who scored the goal to keep Spurs third in the table. They are now five points behind leaders Manchester City and three behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
On the other hand, Burnley remain 17th in the standings, two points clear of the danger zone. But Southampton can have a say tomorrow when they play Arsenal.
Here’s how Spurs’ fans reacted to this scrappy victory, rounding off their perfect post-Champions League enjoyment.
