According to a report in Daily Mail, Championship club West Bromwich Albion have enquired about Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama. And the Premier League side are open to listening to offers for the player.
However, as per the report, the Kenyan star is willing to stay in north London and fight for his place in the team. He does not want to drop down to the Championship and ply his trade there.
Here’s why Spurs should let go of Wanyama, either this month or in the summer, and buy another defensive midfielder:
Wanyama has just featured in four Premier League games this season after missing a huge chunk of pre-season and now he is out injured as well.
He missed a total of 26 games due to Cartilage damage last season, which proves the fact that he hasn’t contributed much to the progress of the team in the last 15-18 months.
These injury problems are not helping the player whatsoever. Mauricio Pochettino’s style of playing is quite demanding, as they play the high-pressing system that needs to be practised in a similar manner during the training sessions.
Hence, it would be naturally difficult for any player who has had multiple injuries in the last year or so to make a come back into this team. Wanyama’s injuries have been related to cartilage and knee, two of the most important parts of a footballer’s body, especially for a midfielder playing a high-intensity game.
Hence, the Kenyan, who was signed by Spurs for £11m, came back from injury a few months ago and then got injured again. The best thing for him would be to leave the club and join another team where the intensity would not be very high. That change will aid him to grow as a player and start afresh.
From Tottenham’s viewpoint, there is no point keeping a player who is injury-prone now, especially because there is less chance of him getting back to his best even when he gets fit. They require someone who is fit, strong, tactically aware and can play the defensive midfield role without much fuss.
The best deal would be to sell Victor Wanyama, get some funds and spend that on a new player.
