Everton centre-back Ashley Williams could yet stay at Goodison Park despite the club’s decision to sell him this summer. The Welshman is confident that he will fight for his place in the team under the new management of Marco Silva.

The 33-year-old has only one year left in his contract and is set to go down the pecking order under Silva. Williams had a stuttering season last time around and doesn’t seem to be the right man to take up the first-choice role for the Toffees.

Everton should sell Williams

With Everton linked with centre-backs Yerry Mina, Alfie Mawson and Ben Gibson, there is a high probability that one of them might join the Toffees this summer.

Michael Keane will be given a chance to prove his worth next season and Marco Silva will need someone capable of being a part of the squad for a potential long-term project.

Selling Williams will not indicate anything related to his quality. The Welshman is still a very good defender who possesses great tenacity and willingness to win.

But at the age of 33, his consistency is starting to take a hit and this will not help Silva to build a squad with a steady defence as the base.

Taking stats into perspective, Everton conceded 31 goals in 24 games when Williams played last season, leaking 10 in two games against Arsenal. One can imagine why the Toffees are seeking to sell the defender.

The Welshman’s personal stat record wasn’t great too. He only had a tackle rate of 57% and was easily shrugged off in physical games (won 81 duels and lost 73). He also made 3 defensive errors, with 1 of them leading to the goal.
