Do Chelsea need William Carvalho when they already have Ramires, Matic and van Ginkel in the team?
No! The answer is a blatant No! Chelsea do not need Carvalho because of many reasons, out of which unnecessary buying and financial fair play restrictions are the major reasons.
There have been rumours that Chelsea are interested in snapping up the £7m rated tough tackling Portuguese destroyer from Sporting in the summer. According to me, signing him would be a waste, which is why Chelsea wouldn’t consider to buy such an expensive player when they already have a lot of spending to do on a striker.
But then the matter of Ramires arises. Ramires hasn’t been influencing the game in a positive way off late. He has been reduced to the role of solely being a strong destroyer and a midfield engine this season. So it does make sense if Ramires is sold to fund the move for this talented 22-year old defensive midfield player.
But this move is highly unlikely considering the fact that Mourinho himself has been very appreciative of Ramires’ work ethic and style of play that helps Chelsea defend counters pretty well. And as for Ramires’ lack of vision during his passing, even William Carvalho isn’t known for his pin-point key passes as much as he’s known for his ultra-strong tackling.
Plus if Chelsea consider Carvalho for even squad depth purposes, they have Marco van Ginkel and Nathaniel Chalobah waiting on the bench. We can also add the experienced John Obi Mikel who has been in a Chelsea shirt since the past eight years and is arguably worthy enough of playing for the first team albeit his substitute appearances this season. So buying Carvalho won’t be good for both parties, as Chelsea obviously will give Matic the undisputed place in the squad whereas there will be too much competition for the second pivot position which mostly Ramires or van Ginkel will grab for their participation in attack.
Carvalho is a long term Manchester United target and with the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan in competition for the midfielder, it is better not to waste time running behind a player who is a surplus for the team and concentrate on rather more important issues.
