Aston Villa opinion: Should Villa sign Tom Carroll permanently?

Villa got hold of former Tottenham prodigy Tom Carroll in January and the move hasn’t quite gone to plan. Carroll has made just two substitute appearances since his January switch and has now been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury.

The 26-year-old is expected to return to the Liberty Stadium at the end of the season following a dismal loan spell. However, Carroll is an exceptional talent in central midfield and if given time, he has the potential to achieve great things for any club.

Villa, despite how the move has turned out, should try to make the move permanent in the summer and Dean Smith should take him under his wing to help him achieve his full potential.

Carroll was always expected to be a fantastic midfield player since his early days with Spurs. However, the Englishman’s career has gone downhill ever since he made his senior debut for the North Londoners.

After making 56 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, he was finally sold to Swansea City, a club where he had already spent a year on loan. Carroll was an instrumental figure for them in the 2017/18 Premier League campaign where he featured 37 times.

After Swansea’s relegation to the Championship, Carroll missed just two of the Swans’ first 14 games but failed to even make the squad since the game against Blackburn in October. Lack of game time pushed him away to Villa, where he has once again failed to earn game time.

Carroll deserves another chance at a club like Villa, who could really do with someone of his attributes.

The 26-year-old’s comfort on the ball is an important asset to a team who are looking to get promoted to the Premier League and Carroll will certainly push Villa’s chances of promotion if they fail in their attempt this season.

Carroll’s range of passing is quite impressive and he can be used in multiple midfield positions to suit the team’s needs. The midfielder still has a lot to give in his career and under a manager like Dean Smith, he can be a mainstay in the Villa midfield for the next 5 years.

Conclusion

Aston Villa should not be fooled by Carroll’s performances in the limited opportunities he received. The club should make a permanent move for him in the summer.

The youngster is unfortunate to have picked up an injury which has hurt his chances to make a lasting impression but Villa should give the midfielder another chance next season.
