Southampton vs Liverpool report – Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool showed incredible grit once again, this time to come from a goal down to beat Southampton 3-1 away at the St.Mary’s to reclaim top spot in the Premier League table.

Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson were the scorers for the Reds. These goals came after Shane Long had put the Saints ahead very early on.

Around the ninth minute, a Ryan Bertrand cross in the box was flicked on by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg towards Long. The latter, who was unmarked eight yards from goal, took a touch before putting the ball into the back of the net.

The Southampton striker had another great chance to score and make it 2-0, but he completely missed his connection with the ball.

Then, nine minutes from half-time, Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a beauty of a cross to find Keita in the box amidst every other tall man around. The midfielder didn’t do any mistake in heading that in to restore parity.

Liverpool showed great determination to keep going and find a second goal. Eventually, from a Southampton corner, Salah was freed by a Henderson header.

The Egyptian then ran half the length of the field with the ball and scored with great calmness to give his team the lead 11 minutes from time.

The points were secured in the 86th minute when Roberto Firmino stretched the hosts’ defence before finding a pass towards Henderson. The captain then just had to put his foot through the ball to score.

All in all, it was not a vintage Liverpool performance but the character and the moments of quality they showed really stood out tonight.
