Why Derby Should Beat Rangers To The Signing Of Louis Moult

Derby’s re-shaping under Gary Rowett will start to take shape over the coming weeks, and the man in charge at Pride Park is currently mulling over a bid for Motherwell forward Louis Moult. The player is also a potential target for Glasgow giants Rangers and so he’s a man in demand at the moment.

It’s been suggested by owner Mel Morris that manager Rowett will have all the autonomy he needs to rebuild during what is his first transfer window in charge, and there’s no doubt that they need a new striker. David Nugent hit just 6 goals this season and veteran striker Darren Bent weighed in with the princely amount of 10; figures which will not be enough in the Championship if Derby are to challenge for automatic promotion.

Moult was born in Stoke-on-Trent, not a million miles away from Derby, and so may see a move back to the English midlands as a good thing for his family, though a move to Rangers in fairness would in itself represent a big step up without having to move home at all.

Moult is 25-years-old now and is beginning to reach his peak as a striker. His profile is that of an improving player, having shown precious little output in the opening years of his career until finding his feet at Nuneaton town in the National League in England back in 2013/14. He hit 18 goals that season which earned him a move to Wrexham, where another 23 goals followed within a year.

His progress was rapid and from there he moved on to Motherwell, scoring 18 times in his debut season before going on to match that tally this term as well. The fact that he gradually keeps stepping up while still finding the net shows his ascension up the ranks. And so either a striking job at Rangers or a crack at the English Championship look appropriate for him now.

Signing Louis Moult could prove to be a relatively inexpensive way to start remoulding Derby County’s squad and adding goals to it; especially important since it seems like top scorer Tom Ince will be sold very soon. Winger Ince’s sale could yet be a good thing for Rowett, with only a little amount of Ince’s transfer fee needed to capture Moult and begin the process of turning Derby into a high-scoring Championship superpower.
