This summer promises to be a very lively one on the transfer front in Glasgow with both major clubs exchanging players in order to balance the books while improving their respective squads.
Both Rangers and Celtic will be busy over the next few months, though their objectives are rather different. Despite the need to strengthen their side in order to complete better in Europe, Celtic’s main focus is perhaps on keeping some of their better players at the club.
Rangers meanwhile are desperate to overhaul Scotland’s second-best, Aberdeen, before going after Celtic at the top but a lot of work is needed in the transfer market for that to happen. Here are 5 deals which may go through in Glasgow over the coming months:
The ex-Liverpool man is still under contract at Sunderland and so a fee would be needed to secure his services. Sunderland’s finances are in bad shape at present though and it’s certain that they will need to sell off some of their assets over the next few weeks, having been relegated from the Premier League.
Borini, though perhaps not as good as Moussa Dembele, would be a better option in Europe than Leigh Griffiths and could just add the extra bit of quality needed in the Champions League.
The player himself has expressed a wish to leave and clearly wants to try out his skills in the English Premier League. Frankly, a lot of questions can be raised about his ability to succeed in the English league. However, West Brom seem keen on him and a move could be on the cards soon.
Aberdeen skipper Jack is out of contract at the end of May and despite his manager’s insistence that he going nowhere, the midfielder has never refused to rule out a move. Jack moving to Rangers will not go down well at all with Aberdeen fans, who have little but distain for the Gers.
Not only would Rangers save money on what would be a crucial signing (since Jack would be a free agent), but they would get one over a major rival. There is no love lost between themselves and Aberdeen on the terraces, so stealing their home-grown skipper for free would certainly count as a transfer coup.
It’s been a while since Rangers took the best domestic talent. But in Moult, they would be capturing a potential star of the future. The 25-year-old has not hit his peak yet but smashed in 15 Premiership goals for struggling Motherwell in each of the last 2 seasons and is getting better.
Since selling Daryl Murphy to Newcastle last summer, Ipswich Town have been lacking a focal point in their attack; someone who can be their match-winner. It appears that Mick McCarthy is interested in bringing Garner to Suffolk from Ibrox and he may well be just what is needed at Portman Road next season. Caixinha does not appear to see the hit man as the solution to their problems up front.
