Burnley opinion: Should the Clarets win the race for Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo?

According to reports from English news outlet the Lancashire Live, Burnley are interested in making a move for Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo. While there have been corresponding reports that say that Burnley are not interested, the 23-year-old would be a rather astute signing. The Belgian has been in good form for his current side Rapid Vienna.

Born into the same family as the Lukaku brothers – Jordan and Romelu, the full-back’s career hasn’t quite hit the same heights. But despite that, he has a bright future ahead of him and it’s why a move to the Premier League would do him a lot of good.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at renowned Belgian side Club Brugge before joining Vienna in 2017. He finished his debut season with a rather impressive 27 appearances, creating five goals along the way, showcasing just what he can do.

A lot like Jordan Lukaku, the 23-year-old can play across the left-hand side, although his preferred position is as a left-back. It’s where Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo flourishes as it puts his speed and athleticism to great use.

Very very rapid and a rather impressive dribbler, running up and down the flanks before delivering a pinpoint cross towards the centre.

It’s why he finished the season with six goal contributions. His pace also helps him to get in between players and his tactical awareness combined with a rather impressive defensive nuance allows him to intercept play brilliantly.

The Belgian possesses excellent reactions and can recover quickly, thanks to his agility. His powerful runs on the left flank would remind of you of Real Madrid full-back Marcelo and like the Brazilian, Mbombo is capable of dribbling his way into the box without any trouble.

But more than anything, he’s faster than either choice Sean Dyche has right now. Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo is also much younger, with nearly a ten-year age difference between him and Phil Bardsley, with seven years separating him and Matthew Lowton.

To make things even worse, Burnley boss Sean Dyche couldn’t depend on either right-back. Instead he opted to give them each 50% of the minutes available and that may have hurt the club more than he anticipated.

While they are good defenders, neither are good full-backs and that makes a lot of difference, both offensively and defensively.
