Bournemouth opinion: Robin Olsen would be a great coup for the Cherries

Italian news outlet Calciomercato has reported that AS Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen is among Bournemouth’s top targets in the summer. The Cherries are looking for a new goalkeeper and believe that the AS Roma flop can be their man. A Monchi signing, the 29-year-old has struggled to make a significant impression this season.

Replacing Alisson Becker would be a difficult task for any goalkeeper and the stats don’t lie. Olsen has only managed to keep 4 clean sheets this season, as opposed to Alisson’s 17 for Roma last season. The 29-year-old has had a forgettable season but could find himself prospering at the Vitality Stadium.

Callum Wilson’s return has reignited some hope in the Cherries but it’s in the defence that they still require reinforcements. Both Asmir Begovic and Artur Boruc have struggled this season, with the former Chelsea goalkeeper spending most of his time on the bench since January (Sky Sports and the Sun).

The 39-year-old Boruc isn’t getting any younger either. This has seen a large number of goalkeepers being linked with a move to the Vitality Stadium, including Jack Butland (Sky Sports).

Robin Olsen would be of a similar profile, with the Swedish star using his remarkable 6ft 6in frame to great use over the last couple of months. While he has struggled during his time in Rome, the 29-year-old is still a far better goalkeeper when compared to either of Bournemouth’s current options.

Tall, agile and quick off his feet, Olsen combines that with decent control of the ball. While that is not something Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe prioritises in his goalkeepers, it’s a valuable asset if and when Howe changes his tactics.

Despite Olsen’s issues this season, he remains a quality goalkeeper. Furthermore, Tuttomercatoweb have reported that Roma are looking to offload the Swedish international this summer.

They believe that they cannot depend on the 29-year-old anymore and are open to move him away from the Italian capital.

Conclusion

Bournemouth have been an upper mid-table club for a few seasons now and if they were to add the right players over the summer, they might even challenge for a Europa League spot.

If they do not add a new goalkeeper, they will struggle next season in all likelihood. Someone like Robin Olsen would be an ideal transfer as mentioned above.
