Better Pass Completion (78%) Than Kane: Should Tottenham Go For This Rising Talent?

Share

Ayoze Perez scored an important goal for Newcastle as they defeated Tottenham at White Hart Lane and that goal could have a lot of ramifications for the Spanish striker. Perez had joined Newcastle from Tenerife but has shown that he does have the ability to change games, especially after his last minute goal against Spurs.

He is now being linked with a move to Tottenham and Spurs have been looking to bolster their attack. Perez does have the pace and trickery to pose a different kind of threat to Harry Kane but is it the right move for Spurs, who are trying to make it back into the UEFA Champions League?

Spanish no go for Spurs

Perez’s goal might have cost Tottenham a point and given Newcastle a lease of life, but he hasn’t done this on a regular basis. He would be great to have coming off the bench and changing the complexity of the game with his pace and trickery, but he isn’t the greatest when it comes to running about and being a nuisance to the opposition.

Perez is extremely quick though but does drift in and out of games. When compared to Tottenham’s star striker, Harry Kane, the Spaniard doesn’t really come out on top. Thanks to stats from Squawka.com, Perez and Kane’s seasons thus far for their respective clubs were compared based on per 90 metrics.

Perez does have a better pass completion rate in the Premier League this season with 78% compared to Kane’s 73% but the English striker more or less trumps the Newcastle attacker in other measures.

Kane provides more key passes every 90 minutes compared to Perez and also takes close to double the number of shots per game than Perez. Kane averages 4 shots on goal per 90 minutes while Perez only manages 2 shots on goal per game.

However, Kane does have a better shot accuracy with 63% of his shots hitting the target while Perez only comes in with 43% this season. Perez though isn’t an all-out goal scorer who can be dependable. In his first full season at Newcastle, Perez only managed seven goals in 39 appearances for Newcastle, while Kane in his first full season managed 31 goals in 51 appearances.

Perez hasn’t scored too many goals this season either with only four goals from his 16 appearances thus far while Kane has already bagged 10 goals from 19 appearances in all competitions. Perez might be a faster player than Kane and could well be a great option to have off the bench but barring that, he certainly wouldn’t be able to give much to Tottenham and the club shouldn’t be trying to make a move on him, simply because he hasn’t performed on a consistent basis.
