Benzema In, De Gea Out?

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, David de Gea is set to leave Manchester United and join Real Madrid this season if the papers are to be believed. De Gea was magnificent for Manchester United as he brought them back into the Champions League this season and seems to have set his heart on moving back to Real Madrid after having played a few seasons for Atletico Madrid.

The 24-year-old would command a huge price but Real Madrid have a few players they might want to get rid of and Karim Benzema seems to be the one that they are willing to use to close this deal. The 27-year-old French striker has been one of Real Madrid’s best players since he joined the club in 2009, but it seems his time is up at the Bernabeu but are Manchester United winning in this deal?

Show me the money!

David De Gea

To be fair, if any team gets a chance to get the signature of David de Gea, they would be throwing obscene amounts of money. De Gea was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League by a mile and his time at United has seen him become a much better and stronger goalkeeper than he was at Atletico Madrid. Those days of aimlessly flapping about at crosses are almost gone and he has bulked up as well.

Manchester United would have wanted to hold on to him for longer but if a player sets his heart to play for Real Madrid, it is pretty hard to keep him grounded. David de Gea would be an excellent choice to replace a legend at Madrid, Iker Casillas and the Spanish club would have to pay quite a hefty sum to get their man.

The deal will be sweetened by the fact that they are throwing in one of their best players, Karim Benzema in the deal. Although most Manchester United fans would have hoped for Gareth Bale coming in the other way, Benzema by no way is a poor player. The striker has scored 133 goals in 281 games for Madrid, not a bad record to have, especially since all the goals seem to come in from Cristiano Ronaldo most of the time.

The deal would be considered a success for United on how much cash they get, if they get anything in the range of £15-20 million, it wouldn’t be bad, although they would want something much more substantial than that. The club will be willing to spend a lot of money to strengthen their team and do better than they did this season. This amount coming in would probably be put right out again to get a few players.

The problem Manchester United would have is in finding a replacement for De Gea, sure they already have Victor Valdes at the club but he isn’t a long term solution and neither is he on the same level as De Gea, plus he has been recovering from a big injury. Manchester United would need to dip into the transfer market once again and Louis Van Gaal would have to spend big to replace De Gea, but this deal would be a win-win for United. They would get a great attacker to partner Rooney this season and will have the money to buy a good goalkeeper, as long as Van Gaal does the right scouting of players.
