Barcelona opinion: Why Barca should not consider signing Matteo Darmian

According to Daily MailBarcelona are plotting a surprise move for Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian. The report also states that the Catalans are monitoring the 29-year-old’s situation as Ernesto Valverde eyes defensive reinforcements.

Barcelona should not make a move for Darmian

Darmian has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United over the past few seasons, making only limited appearances. The Italian joined the Old Trafford outfit in 2015 for £12.7m and has made 92 appearances till date, playing just 25 matches in the last two seasons.

Matteo Darmian

The ex-Torino man has still a year left on his contract, but his chances with the first-team are looking bleaker than ever, with players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ashley Young, Diego Dalot being higher up the pecking order.

Meanwhile, the Baluagrana have a swarm of right-backs including the likes of Nelson Semedo, Sergi Roberto and talented reserves prospect Moussa Wague.

Though Darmian can play as a left-back, he is not the type of player who fits the current requirements at Barcelona. Instead, the La Liga side should look for a young and energetic player who can compete with Jordi Alba, their primary left-back.

The 31-year-old had no backup last season, which led to a horrific display against Liverpool, costing his side the Champions League.

Ernesto Valverde

With the Spaniard entering his 30’s, the Catalans should look for long-term replacements rather than going for temporary solutions. That being said, Darmian would end up being a misfit at Nou Camp.

Verdict

The Catalan giants have already made their attack an unstoppable force with the recent purchase of Antoine Griezmann. Whilst there is a dire need for the left-backs at Nou Camp, Barca should not pay heed to options like Darmian.
