West Ham opinion: Why the Hammers should go all out for Bertrand Traore

According to a report from The Sun, West Ham and Tottenham are battling with each other for the signing of Lyon forward Bertrand Traore.

Bertrand Traore, 23, has been a star at Lyon since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, scoring 29 goals and setting up 12 in 91 appearances. The Burkina Faso international is progressing really well since leaving the Blues.

The 23-year-old forward scored 11 goals in 48 matches in all competitions in the 2018-19 season for Lyon, who are more or less a selling club in France.

They have sold Tanguy Ndombele, Nabil Fekir and Ferland Mendy this summer, so there’s a possibility that the Ligue 1 outfit might sanction the sale of Traore if a substantial bid is tabled this summer.

That being said, West Ham should go all out and beat Tottenham to the signing of Traore ahead of the new campaign.

West Ham have signed Pablo Fornals and Sebastien Haller this summer from Villarreal and Frankfurt respectively, proving that they have the ambition and finances to tempt players to join them. Despite signing Haller, the Hammers need another quality forward to cope with rotation and injuries.

Traore, who came up through the ranks at Chelsea, would be ideal for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. He faced an uphill battle trying to break into the Chelsea first-team and was shipped out on loan to Vitesse Arnhem and Ajax.

The 23-year-old has managed to find some consistency at Lyon, but he needs a manager who can help him unlock his true potential.

Pellegrini could be the right man to aid Traore’s development. Traore would add pace and flair to the West Ham attack next season.

His ability to play as a winger and as a striker would definitely give Pellegrini a different option up top. The Burkina Faso international’s clever sense of positioning coupled with his directness and burst of acceleration could make him a useful addition to the West Ham setup.

Verdict

West Ham have the financial clout to fund a move for Traore, whose versatility could solve Pellegrini’s offensive woes and potentially make them a strong contender to break into the top six next season.
