Bad move Mou – Why Man United’s £505,000-a-week investment could be the biggest blunder by the club in recent times

Why Manchester United have committed a blunder by signing Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a sensational deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan go the other way (h/t BBC).

While Manchester City were left scratching their heads, the Red Devils released an iconic video of the Chilean playing ‘Glory Glory Man United’ on a piano. It was one of the most circulated videos on social media and the excitement among the fans and critics was palpable.

Manchester United also agreed to pay him astronomical wages in the region of £505,000-a-week which is ridiculously expensive, to say the least.

Regardless, Sanchez started making appearances for the club as Jose Mourinho and his men worked hard to secure a runners-up spot during the business end of the previous campaign. But has Sanchez lived up to the expectations?

Most certainly not. In fact, the piano is the probably the only thing he played well at Old Trafford.

United were lucky enough to finish as runners-up behind City but the jarring gap in points was enough to paint the true picture. The club endured a lacklustre summer as well as they landed only the likes of Diogo Dalot, Lee Grant and Fred.

United’s start to the ongoing season was less-than-ideal as well, losing miserably to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur. However, they do deserve credit for winning consecutively against Burnley, Watford and Young Boys.

But amidst all this, Sanchez’s woes have only continued. Although he has been deployed ahead of the young and powerful Anthony Martial on numerous occasions, his performances have hardly ever been up to the mark.

Now, he has combined well with Luke Shaw on the left side and the duo does share a healthy relationship when it comes to supplying crosses. But besides all that, has Sanchez scored or assisted as much as he did at Arsenal?

Alexis Sanchez

We all know the answer to that. Not questioning his abilities as a player but his performances have certainly not justified his sky-high wages. He might not necessarily go missing on the pitch; he does contribute decently enough.

But at the same time, his displays have not made any sort of difference for United. In fact, it would have been better for Mourinho to continue rotating between Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Hence, considering the money involved, it is safe to suggest that United have committed a major blunder by signing the Chilean attacker.
