Aston Villa Opinion: Why Daniel Sturridge would be a good fit at Villa Park

According to a report from the Sun, the Premier League newbies are interested in making a move for Daniel Sturridge after the striker was released by Liverpool this summer.

The 29-year-old star had fallen down the pecking order at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp, as a multitude of injuries hampered his progress. The Villans are considering an approach to sign Sturridge, who is said to be a fan of the club and came through the ranks in Villa’s academy as a youth player for many years.

Dean Smith has wasted little time strengthening their squad for next season in the top-flight and has already wrapped up the deals for Jota, Matt Targett, Kortney Hause, Anwar El Ghazi and Wesley Moraes. The signing of Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth is the latest addition at Villa Park, after the defender impressed on loan at the club last season.

Villa also relied on the goals of Tammy Abraham last season to help them achieve promotion to the Premier League. His 26 goals weighed in gold and following his return to Chelsea, Smith needs more goalscorers if they are to avoid relegation next season.

Wesley Moraes is young and experienced at the highest level, so he cannot be expected to hit the ground running for Villa. The Brazilian needs time to adapt to the demands of the English game and Smith would be wise to rotate him with a proven top-flight performer. That’s where the signing of Sturridge would make sense for the Midlands club.

The England international would be a smart fit for the club, with the striker having proved he can find the back of the net as he scored 67 goals in 160 games for Liverpool. A skilful dribbler, Sturridge is a player who can play with his back towards the goal and hold up play for the rest of the teammates to join in the attack.

He certainly knows where the goal is and as far as offering an experienced head to the dressing room is concerned, the ex-Chelsea ace would be a valuable addition

The Englishman’s injury problems make him a risk but Villa will get him for no transfer fee as he is currently a free agent. Add Sturridge’s pedigree and top-flight experience to the mix, his potential addition could be a massive coup for the Villans.

Verdict

Sturridge still has a lot to offer at the highest level and a move to Villa would be the right step. There is no doubt that if he can put his injury demons behind, then he can be a top signing for Dean Smith’s side.
