Aston Villa Opinion: Why Tyrone Mings would be a massive coup for Villa?

According to a report from the Guardian, newly-promoted Premier League side Aston Villa are set to sign Tyrone Mings on a permanent basis in a deal that could be worth £26.5m to Bournemouth.

Mings, 26, was loaned to the Midlands club in January from Bournemouth. He played in Aston Villa’s win over Derby County in the Championship play-off final and informed Bournemouth of his wishes to join the Midlands club shortly after the triumph at Wembley.

Dean Smith has been very busy in the transfer market having signed Anwar El Ghazi, Matt Targett, Kortney Hause, Jota and Wesley Moraes so far following promotion. Mings will be the latest addition to the Villa ranks and something that will be considered as a big coup for Smith and co.

Mings was signed by the Cherries in 2015 from Ipswich for a fee of £8million. Recurrent injury problems and lack of form limited him to just 22 appearances for the south coast club over the last four years. He signed a new long-term contract with Bournemouth in 2017 but rarely made into Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

However, the 26-year-old rediscovered his form at Aston Villa under Smith, forming an excellent partnership with Manchester United loanee Axel Tuanzebe at the heart of defence. The duo were fantastic, making Villa’s defence such a tight unit to crack. While Tuanzebe is a part of Manchester United’s pre-season tour and is very unlikely to return for another spell at Villa Park, Mings could potentially form a strong partnership with James Chester next season.

The Villans had to buy Mings at any cost – for a number of reasons. He was an incredible player in his six-month loan spell and quickly became a fan favourite at Villa Park. The 26-year-old was the club’s defensive lynchpin, fitting seamlessly into Smith’s system.

Nevertheless, considering the versatile defender’s injury problems and lack of game time with Bournemouth in the Premier League means Villa are taking a massive gamble. His awful injury record is surely reason enough for Villa to demand a lower figure. Everybody knows the market is highly inflated and Smith is ready to take a big risk by paying over the odds for Mings.

Verdict

Mings thrived under Smith at West Midlands last season and must prove his worth in the Premier League. It hasn’t been a happy story for the 26-year-old in the Premier League but the Villa faithful will hope that isn’t the case with the defender next season.
