Aston Villa opinion: The Villans should consider signing Charlie Austin

According to reports from the Daily Echo, Aston Villa have joined the race for Southampton star Charlie Austin.

The Lions may have already signed Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge, but if they are looking for a more experienced Premier League star, then they can do little wrong by signing Austin this summer.

The 29-year-old has struggled this season to consistently find the goal, netting just 2 in the Premier League and 3 in all competitions. It’s been a permanent struggle for the Englishman, which is a large surprise given just how consistent he has been over the last few years.

On average, Austin has managed to net 8 goals a season, with a career-best of 18 with QPR. That earned him the move to Southampton, but Austin has failed to hit the same heights once again and that is exactly where Dean Smith comes in.

The Aston Villa manager has done well with struggling players over the last year and a half. That includes resurrecting James Chester, Tammy Abraham, Conor Hourihane, Andre Green and a few others.

It’s why the move makes sense because while Wesley should be the first choice star, Austin will be their man off the bench. The super-sub to help Villa out of tough situations and given his physicality, it’s a move that the 29-year-old can do very effectively.

He’ll turn 30 in a week or so, which will make a lot of difference as to his long-term future. But when it comes to a short-term move, Austin will be able to make an impact for the Lions.

They need that in their team, especially given how badly the others at the club have struggled this last season in the Championship.

Because other than Tammy Abraham, who netted a very impressive 26 goals, no one else stepped up to help out. Between Ross McCormack, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Jonathan Kodjia, Scott Hogan and Kienan Davis only nine goals were scored.

But to make things even worse, Kodjia scored every single one, which is where Charlie Austin does help out. McCormack is on his way out and Abraham has returned to Chelsea, which will hurt Villa but they’ve brought in Wesley.

Conclusion

Aston Villa needs a few new additions if they are to survive this season and adding someone like Charlie Austin will help their cause. The 29-year-old needs a new lease of life and that is exactly what a club like Aston Villa can help him out with.

With time, Austin should hopefully find a way back to be the bully that he was and Villa need to push this over the line.
