Everton beating West Ham to sign this 28-year-old La Liga striker would be a massive statement of intent

Everton Opinion: Rodrigo would be a brilliant fit at Goodison Park

According to a report from The Sun, Everton and West Ham are interested in signing Valencia striker Rodrigo Moreno this summer.

The Spanish international, 28, has enjoyed an exceptional last couple of years at Valencia. He scored eight goals in La Liga while also providing six assists for Los Che, whilst playing a starring role in the Copa del Rey triumph over Barcelona this past season.

Rodrigo Moreno has told Valencia he would like to again play in the Premier League, having spent a season-long loan spell with Bolton Wanderers back in 2010-11.

The report claims Valencia value their striker for £70 million but are more likely to accept a figure of around £30 million. For that latter price, Everton must attempt to beat West Ham to the signing of Rodrigo.

Everton certainly need to bolster their attacking ranks this summer having endured problems in scoring goals last term. The Toffees lack prolific goalscorers, with Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

Tosun and Calvert-Lewin’s struggles in front of goal saw the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison burden the responsibility of scoring goals this past campaign.

That must change if Marco Silva wants to challenge for a European spot next term. A prolific goalscorer must be the need of the hour for the Merseysiders and Silva would do a good job by luring Rodrigo from Valencia to the Goodison Park.

Rodrigo brings a lot more to the table with his versatility and will thrive in Silva’s system at Everton. There could be questions marks over the Brazil-born attacker’s age, and with him having turned 28 is something to consider, the Toffees also need to balance out youth with experience that can deliver now on a consistent basis.

With Calvert-Lewin not yet hitting those levels, it will be important for Everton – if they do intend on selling Tosun – to have another player providing the team with goals.

A player with a good eye for a pass, Rodrigo can create chances for his teammates with subtle flick-ons and deft touches in the final third, creating space for the others to pull the strings.

The Brazil-born Spanish international’s most eye-catching attributes are his tenacity, pace, dribbling skills and clinical nature in front of goal.

The former Benfica star has the ability to time his jump to perfection to beat the opposition to the aerial balls, making him a clear threat from set-pieces.

Verdict

With an experienced professional in Rodrigo, Everton would have an array of talent that can cause damage to any opposition in the Premier League.

The Spanish international can do a world of good to the Toffees’ chances of securing a Europa League spot.
