Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners make a move for Kurt Zouma?

The Sun has reported that Arsenal manager Unai Emery is keen on adding defensive reinforcements in the summer. Appointed by the club as heir to Arsene Wenger last summer, Emery has done a rather impressive job with the resources he has at hand.

While the former PSG boss wasn’t handed a bad squad by any means, there are a few holes that he has to plug. Freshening the back-line seems to have been one of his top priorities, which he did by adding Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner last summer.

That proved to be a stop-gap solution, with various games over the last seven-odd months showcasing that the club need their very own Virgil Van Dijk. Hence, it is not surprising to see that the Sun has reported that Arsenal have shortlisted four centre-backs.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, Getafe’s Djene Dakonam, Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma make up the list, with Zouma potentially the best option. Alderweireld is currently at Tottenham and the sheer rivalry between the two sides does make the move a tough one.

Dakonam is a great shout, but the 27-year-old plays in the La Liga and has no Premier League experience.

That leaves the Gunners with just Maguire and Zouma, but the former’s £90million transfer fee could be a little out of Arsenal’s reach. All this simply points towards Kurt Zouma and the Chelsea man is a great option to have at the back.

His performances for Everton this season have showcased exactly that, with Zouma being arguably their best performer in defence alongside Lucas Digne. The fact that he is on loan at Everton and will return to Chelsea gives Arsenal a chance.

The Gunners are chasing a top-four spot and to do that, they need to stop conceding so many goals.

Their current streak over the two weeks stands at 10 goals conceded in four games. This includes back-to-back losses against Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester City, conceding three goals in each defeat.

Things have to change and adding someone like Kurt Zouma will certainly help them move forward and into a brighter future.

Conclusion

At the age of 24, Kurt Zouma has already amassed well over 100 appearances in the Premier League and that makes him a brilliant option for Arsenal. His defensive ability and composure on the ball would help Arsenal ease into an era without Laurent Koscielny, who is ageing quickly.
