Arsenal opinion: The Gunners shouldn’t consider Dwight McNeil

According to the Metro, Arsenal have joined the race for Burnley starlet Dwight Mcneil with the Gunners looking for reinforcements. It seems that the young winger has proven just what he can do over the final few months of the season.

Brought up from Burnley’s youth squad at the start of last season, McNeil struggled to make an impact. However, after signing a new deal in January, McNeil was shown exactly how much the club value him and he finally made his mark for the Clarets.

He has played consistently since Boxing day 2018, making 16 continuous appearances since then. Not only that, the 19-year-old has contributed to 8 goals in that time, showcasing his ability time after time.

That is a rare sight in the Premier League this season, with few youngsters getting a chance to regularly impress. This is emphasised by the fact that Dwight McNeil is now the most creative teenager in the Premier League.

Despite all that, this is a move that is not meant for a club like Arsenal, especially not right now. Sure, adding a teenager with the confidence and flair that McNeil has will only help their cause but the club are already full of a few teenage stars.

The likes of Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith-Rowe, Matteo Guendouzi, Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and even Zech Medley are all doing well. Not just that, Nelson and Nketiah have a chance at actually doing well for the club, eventually making it big with a little time and effort.

Nelson has proven that during his loan spell at Hoffenheim and so has Smith-Rowe during his spell with RB Leipzig. Arsenal are known for their prowess with youngsters and will need these players to make a big impact.

But that is not something that they can do if the path to the first-team has been blocked by someone like Dwight McNeil. Sure, the 19-year-old is very talented but the move for Arsenal will not be a good one.

Instead, the club need to target more experienced stars and at the same time give more game-time to the starlets that they already have at their disposal.

Conclusion

Arsenal have a rather exciting batch of next-generation stars, which is why they cannot make a move for Dwight McNeil.

The 19-year-old is talented and needs more game-time before he can make the step up to a club like Arsenal. The Gunners need more world-class stars at their disposal and while McNeil is talented, he is far from world-class.
