3 Things We Learned From Arsenal vs Hull City

Share

With the league leaders squaring off against the newly promoted Tigers, we look at the main talking points from the midweek encounter

Arsenal can show their resilient side when needed

With the 2-0 scoreline looking pretty flattering for the visitors, Arsenal breezed past Hull with minimal fuss, as Nicklas Bendtner giving the Gunners an early lead before Mesut Ozil finished it off around the hour mark. Arsenal weren’t at their best but with the negative, defensive style of their opposition, they didn’t have to be. They took both of their best chances and that’s all that was needed. Resilience is a key part of any title chasing team, and with the Arsenal sides in the past few seasons often succumbing to smaller teams’ physical approach, it is not happening this season, and we may well see Arsenal in the same position come May.

Hull aren’t cut out for the Premier League’s better sides

Quite often we see newly promoted teams punishing the bigger sides for their cocky pre-game mentality, but the clubs that do so often also have a bit of talent to carry them past stronger opposition, but to put it kindly, Hull do not. Lacking creativity and goal scoring prowess, Hull are the epitome of a toothless club, and would rather play for a draw against most Premier League opponents than try their luck, and it is teams like Hull that give the Premier League it’s rather ugly reputation when it comes to styles and game plans. If Hull really want to take themselves to the level of the likes of Southampton, investment in players and even a new coach are needed.

Mesut Ozil was worth every penny of the transfer fee

Many have criticised the Germany international for often misfiring in games and sometimes struggling to play the level he can, but he has just joined a club in a league he hadn’t previously played in, the fact that it took Robin van Persie around 5 years to step up is never mentioned, so why make an exception for him? Scoring and playing a part in the first season, Ozil has become the player Arsenal were lacking after the sales of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Able to play as a deep-lying playmaker and also as a traditional number 10, Ozil is one of the most versatile playmakers in world football and has also become one of the, if not the best player in the Premier League.
