3 Reasons Why Manchester United Need Not Spend Big On A Striker For The Next Season

Share

The month of December and January are one of the toughest times in the top flight of English football but Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, who seemed to have lost their way a couple of months ago, have managed to get through it unscathed. They are now unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games (including draws) and are looking to compete for the summit.

The manager will know that his team has a few weaknesses that have to be covered before they can think about the title and the striking position is surely of utmost importance. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic entering his final few years of professional football and Wayne Rooney not helping his cause anymore, United do not have a star striker to lead them to success and there is an impending feeling among the fans that they will have to spend big on a striker atleast after the end of the season. But do they really need one? Here are three reasons why the Red Devils can do without splashing the cash on a striker at the end of the season:

Zlatan:

The Swede is easily one of the fittest players in world football and though he is now 35, he has shown no reduction in his effect in front of goal. Currently the highest goal scorer for United, Ibrahimovic is integral to their plans this season in all competitions and Mourinho has not tried to shield him from the dirty work. Zlatan seems happy to play twice a week even now and he will surely be going strong atleast once a week next season. Mourinho can use him regularly in the Premier League and will only waste another star name if he decides to spend on one.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial:

The young attacking duo already at the club, Rashford and Martial, are among the best youngsters in the world at the moment and this season, they have underutilised at the Old Trafford. With Zlatan occupying the main position, both players have been fighting for one place, on the wing, and they have not been able to effect the game as they would have liked. Yet, they have excelled in that position as asked by their manager and are showing signs of improvement. They will not take long to turn into world-class players but they will need some regular game time to get there. So Mourinho is well advised to stick with them next season rather than spending big in the market.

Lack of options:

There are very few names in the transfer market that are ready to move and can walk into the first team at the Old Trafford. Antoine Griezmann, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Robert Lewandowski, are among the best players in that position in Europe and United have been linked with a big-money move for each of those players in the past. They will surely have to break the world record for transfer fees yet again to land at least one of those names and it is something that United can avoid at the moment. They need a world class player who can take them to the top but if Mourinho can get all his team to play at their best, they already have a team strong enough to beat the best in the game.
