The Blues got a precious away goal in the UEFA Champions League tie against PSG and that would be extremely important if they are to progress into the next round. They also are on course for doing something good in the FA Cup and these two avenues are the only ones where Chelsea could end up with some silverware after a wretched start to the season.
Chelsea would be bringing in a new coach and that would help them at least forget about the rather awful start to this season and build a new for the next one. You can be guaranteed that there would be changes at the club and a lot of players will be sold and new ones will be brought.
Even if they do win the UEFA Champions League or the FA Cup, changes will take place purely because every new man coming into a club provides changes. We look at three positions that Chelsea really need to upgrade in the summer.
Central midfield
Yes, yes, Chelsea might have Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic as the starters for now but even the likes of John Obi Mikel won’t be enough for the next season. The sale of Ramires to a Chinese Super League side means Chelsea are wafer thing in quality for this position and it is no wonder that they have been linked with moves for some top players.
Arturo Vidal and Radja Nainggolan are just two stars that could be coming to Chelsea next season. Not bad for a team that is finally picking up the results in the latter half of the season. The midfield should be a priority for Chelsea more than anything else at the moment.
Right-back
While there have been questions about the centre-back pairing, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma should still do a decent job next season for the Blues. A position that really needs a fresh face has to be the right-back slot which only has Branislav Ivanovic as the only known face.
Ivanovic also has struggled immensely this season and Chelsea do need to bring in someone who can deal with pacey and tricky wingers, something that the Serb struggled to deal with this season. Chelsea have the bucks to get some big names in and it all depends on who comes up to take the managerial position at the club.
Striker
Diego Costa has been hit and miss this season. At the start of the campaign he couldn’t hit an open goal and was having a rather poor time of it up front but under Guus Hiddink he has found his ability to score and play like he used to for Chelsea.
The rest of the ‘attackers’ have been poor for Chelsea all season. Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao don’t really seem to be great at doing anything and must be revamped on. The Chelsea hierarchy will have to work extra hard next season, even if they somehow miraculously end up winning a trophy or two.
