Arsenal might not have been able to challenge for the Premier League title this season, but things have started to click into place a little too late for the club. The second half of their season has been phenomenal and had they started the season in a similar fashion, who knows where they might have finished the season.
Arsenal have dipped into the transfer market a lot and bought a couple of world class players in the last two summer windows but if they want to ensure they stay competitive they need to invest in the squad while they get rid of the deadwood that is at the club. We look at 3 players that need to be released and sold from Arsenal before the start of next season.
Wojciech Szczesny
The Polish international has been frozen out from the Arsenal team and is all set to leave the club; it will be quite a shock if he does remain at the Emirates at the start of next season. Szczesny had a decent start to the season, but then things went rather horrible for him and even after a couple of poor performances he did have a little bit of an episode with cigarettes in the shower. Arsene will be looking to get rid of him, but the question is who would want to sign him.
2. Per Mertesacker
Mertesacker might have all the experience in the world, but this season the German World Cup winner has been caught out too many times with his irrational decision making and also his lack of speed. Arsene did the right thing in bringing in another defender Gabriel Paulista in the January window, but that will not be enough for next season. If Arsenal are to do something better than their current position, they need to bring in a top defender and unfortunately for Per, he might not be playing for the red of Arsenal next season.
3. Mikel Arteta
ArtetaThe Arsenal captain hasn’t really played a lot this season and although he is one of the better players in the club, he isn’t really a lynchpin for the club. Arsenal seem to have found a better pair in midfield with Coquelin and Cazorla taking care of all comers. Arteta isn’t young either and his injury-plagued season is not guarantee about his fitness, he does have a contract till the end of next season but Arsenal should be looking to replace the Spanish midfielder at the end of this season rather than keep him in the squad and lose out on some cash for next season.
