Two free agents Celtic must consider signing this summer

Scottish champions Celtic have had an indifferent start to the new season. It has been difficult for Celtic to sign players in the transfer window and the pressure will be on Brendan Rodgers to get some reinforcements to boost his squad, particularly after the Bhoys’ elimination from the Champions League.

Rodgers has vented his frustration on a number of occasions about Celtic’s perceived lack of quality investment this summer.

So far this summer, the Scottish champions have only spent money on striker Odsonne Edouard and have completed deals for goalkeeper Scott Bain and former left-back Emilio Izaguirre – both free transfers. They have also signed Manchester City youngster Daniel Arzani on loan.

If Celtic are facing problems in splashing the cash, Rodgers must look at the free agents available in the market. Here are two free agents Celtic can consider snapping up.

John Terry

John Terry, 37, is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season. Almost three months on from Villa Park, the veteran centre-back is no closer to finding a new club. Celtic must consider bringing free agent Terry to Parkhead.

It was Celtic’s schoolboy defending that led to their elimination from the Champions League. Dedryck Boyata’s future remains uncertain, while the likes of Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry and Kristoffer Ajer have been underwhelming so far this term.

So Rodgers’ priority should be to strengthen the fragile backline and he could do a top job by adding Terry to his defensive ranks. Given the wealth of experience and the quality he has shown throughout his glittering career, the 37-year-old would be a fantastic signing for the Bhoys.

Terry, the former Chelsea skipper, would also act as the experienced defender that Celtic are desperately in need of; a leader who would guide Ajer and Hendry in improving their game.

Bakary Sako

Although the Celtic defence certainly needs addressing, Rodgers could do well to bolster his attacking options. And Rodgers’ first call should go to free agent Bakary Sako, who left Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

Sako, 30, could not agree on a new contract at Selhurst Park and is now on the hunt for a new home. Celtic should do all they can to land Sako, as the 30-year-old has the pace and the power to be a huge success at Parkhead. He is an explosive goalscoring winger, who can make a difference at the top level.
