A Wrong Choice – Why This 30-Year-Old Argentine Is Not The Man Needed At Manchester United

Share

There have been a few surprises regarding the names of players who are linked with a move to Manchester United. One of the biggest has to be that of Argentine player Lucas Biglia, who seems to be a wanted man at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old currently plays in Serie A with Lazio and has been linked with a move to England for a number of years. Manchester United always want to bring in the best players in the world but this link does seem to be a little out of the ordinary.

Biglia is doing pretty well in Serie A and the game does suit him due to the greater onus on tactics and defence in the Italian league compared to the madcap scramble that is the Premier League. The Argentine plays as a defensive midfielder and would be a great addition to the squad but is he really the answer for United’s failings?

South American flavour in Manchester

United haven’t had the greatest of times with South American players doing well in the club. Angel Di Maria, Diego Forlan and Juan Sebastian Veron as the three really struggled at the club. Biglia would probably play in place of Bastian Schweinsteiger or Morgan Schneiderlin.

Bastian hasn’t had the greatest of times in Manchester and all the talk about signing a Bayern legend hasn’t come to fruition while Morgan has put in a few performances which have been world class but few of them haven’t been that great either.

Looking at the numbers from Squawka.com, it is clear that Biglia does have a big role to play in the attack for Lazio. The Argentine provides 1.9 key passes per game compared to just 0.6 and 0.4 from Bastian and Morgan respective for Manchester United this season. Biglia also provides a greater number of assists which both the United players have not got a single assist to their name in the Premier League this season.

Biglia though would be brought in to do some of the defensive work and this may not work out all too well for United. Biglia for all his attacking play does not have the best pass completion rate compared with Schneiderlin. He also lacks in the numbers, just slightly, regarding interceptions, however, he is better than Bastian in all those stats.

The most telling issue could be regarding Biglia’s age, the Argentine isn’t the youngest player in the league and moving to England might not be the best option for the 30-year-old. Bastian is someone who has struggled – to an extent – this season and well the same could happen with the Lazio star as well.

Manchester United need someone to give them the extra attacking edge but not from midfield. Biglia should stay put in Italy and United should not pursue him, whether Louis van Gaal stays or not.
