Wolves opinion: Should the Wanderers sign Kalvin Phillips?

According to a report from the Birmingham Live, Wolves are set to battle it out with the newly promoted Aston Villa for the signing of Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips in the summer.

The 23-year-old has been hugely impressive for the Whites this season and the report reveals he has also attracted interest from Norwich City, Southampton and Bournemouth in recent weeks.

Wolves are on the lookout for players to improve the squad depth after an unbelievable season in the Premier League. Wolves managed to secure a seventh-place finish while picking up a few big scalps along the way.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will have a chance to compete in the Europa League next season if they can manage to get through the qualifying rounds. The qualifiers will start at least three weeks before the Premier League, which is sure to take its toll on Wolves players.

The Wanderers accomplished a top-seven finish with just 20 players in their squad which deserves a lot of credit but they cannot afford to gamble the same way, with a potential European campaign coming up this season.

Wolves need to bring in solid backup to almost all of their players and the midfield is the perfect place to start. Joao Moutinho is on the wrong side of the thirties, while Ruben Neves’ brilliant performances have alerted the big clubs.

Wolves should do all they can to keep hold of their two star midfield enforcers and add more quality to field alongside them. Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United would be a brilliant option for Nuno Santo to bring in, especially after the kind of season he’s had.

Phillips played 42 times in the Championship last season and was arguably one of the Whites’ best players. The 23-year-old was Bielsa’s trusted commander in the middle of the park and he can do exactly the same for Wolves next season.

Phillips’ reading of the game is exceptional for his age and that combined with his physical presence in the midfield makes him a very reliable player to have in the squad.

The Leeds man is brilliant at interceptions and also has a very good pass on him, which helps him unlock defences from the deep effortlessly.

Conclusion

Wolves should have no second thoughts over the signing of Kalvin Phillips in the summer, and the 23-year-old would be an absolute gem. Phillips is a perfect long-term signing for the defensive midfield role and they should beat all of their other rivals for his signing in the summer.
