According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are looking to sign Mexican international Edson Alvarez.
Alvarez has been a sensation for Liga MX side America Alvarez. The Mexican international is currently helping his national team in the Gold Cup, where he’ll be facing the United States of America in the final.
He is a versatile defensive player, who can play anywhere along the backline but is best used in defensive midfield, a position he thrives in for his national team.
His mix of youth and versatility will be very attractive for a club like Wolves, who require a player like him in two positions.
Nuno Espirito Santo is known for sticking to his first-team. However, with Europa League football on the horizon, along with their aspirations for the Premier League, getting some squad depth is an absolute necessity.
Wolves play a back-three and a double pivot but they hardly ever give their starters a rest, which is why Alvarez would be a great option to cover two positions if required.
It’s also important to note that Joao Moutinho isn’t getting any younger, despite his brilliance last season. He needs to take breaks every now and then and it would help him greatly if someone like Alvarez can do the dirty work and allow him to get on with dictating the tempo of the game.
Alvarez is a great tackler, who likes to break up opponent’s play and recover possession with the best of them. He covers ground easily and is also known for his brilliant ball distribution.
Alvarez will not take a lot of time to settle, as he will be united with his Mexican international teammate Raul Jimenez, who was another outstanding player for Nuno Espirito Santo last season.
Any deal is likey going to take place only after the Gold Cup but Wolves need to make certain that they get this deal over the line.

Alvarez, as mentioned above, fills so many gaps in the squad. He is of the right age, can play multiple positions which will be required next season and has the right sort of work-ethic for Nuno Espirito Santo’s organized team.
There is a great chance for teams like Wolves to capitalize on the weaknesses of the current ‘Big 6’, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all looking like weakened sides now.
