Two Signings Who Can Help Wolves Put Up A Serious Promotion Fight Next Season

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ season has been a disappointment. Although another year in the Championship is guaranteed, they will be talked about as potential promotion candidates. Wolves are a club who have tasted Premier League football before and they will be desperate to achieve that again.

With Aston Villa looking likely to challenge for a top-6 finish and Birmingham perhaps still in this division with Harry Redknapp as manager, the West Midlands rivalry could be something to watch out for over the next year.

In terms of the size of the club and its following, there is little doubt about Wolves’ capability to reach the higher end of this division. But they will need squad reinforcements before the season gets underway. Here we look at two players who could help Paul Lambert’s side realise their ambition:

Karim El Ahmadi

Plying his trade in the Netherlands’ Eredivisie this season with Feyenoord, the Moroccan international midfielder has managed 5 goals from the centre of the park and his performances have been impressive. With a return to the Premier League looking unlikely, Wolves are in with a serious shout of landing the 32-year-old who could add vital experience to Paul Lambert’s team.

The former Aston Villa man’s arrival would allow David Edwards to move further forward, joining the likes of Ben Marshall and Helder Costa in providing more goal threat for Wolves. This signing could be crucial to Wolves’ chances.

Chris Martin

The Derby County striker has spent the season on loan at Fulham, bagging 11 goals in 37 games across all competitions. However, his goal scoring figures do not tell the whole story. The Scotland international’s all-round game is what that makes him so impressive.

Martin’s hold-up play and ability to bring others into the game has meant that the likes of Sone Aluko, Floyd Ayite, Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney have shined this season and it’s a point which is lost on either Salvisa Jokanovic or Paul Lambert himself.

Should Fulham not wish to make Martin’s move permanent – and that could depend on whether or not they achieve promotion to the Premier League, then Lambert might be able to make the former Norwich City man his main summer signing.

Should Wolves succeed in playing a similar attacking style of football employed by Jokanovic at Fulham, then Martin will be pivotal to that. Bringing Marshall, Costa, Edwards and others into play would mean a high scoring Wanderers side and this could go a long way to them realising their ambitions to be promotion contenders once more.
