Why Wolves must beat Arsenal to sign Leandro Trossard in January

According to a report from Metro, Arsenal are interested in signing Genk goalscoring sensation Leandro Trossard.

The 24-year-old has been in blistering form for Genk this season with 16 goals and 3 assists in all competitions so far. He has come through the ranks at Genk and has now become one of the top young stars of the Belgian game.

The 24-year-old winger is unsurprisingly attracting major interest due to his exploits in Belgium, though he is yet to win his first cap for his country despite being called up by manager Roberto Martinez.

With Leandro Trossard attracting serious interest from Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers should rival the Gunners for his signature.

Leandro Trossard

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been much better than what many expected them to ever be in the Premier League this season. They got promoted to the top-flight as winners of the Championship but given they walked into one of the most demanding leagues in European football, very few gave them a chance to succeed.

However, Wolves are sitting comfortably at 10th place in the table after 18 games. To qualify for the Europa League, it will definitely take a lot more than what Nuno Espirito Santo has managed to do so far. The Portuguese manager needs to spend in the forthcoming transfer window if he wishes to qualify for Europe next season.

To put things into perspective, Wolves must prioritise signing Leandro Trossard in January. A technically-gifted and a tactically versatile player, Trossard, a left-winger by trade, can operate on the right, in the midfield, and also as a secondary striker.

Known for his ability to torment defences with his powerful runs and silky dribbling skills, the Belgian is not particularly a physically-imposing attacker but he uses his low centre of gravity to drive his way past the opposition. He is brilliant with the ball at his feet, possesses exquisite vision and can carve open defences with one sublime pass.

To add to his pace, dribbling skills and vision, Trossard is also an excellent finisher in front of the goal. An extremely agile and fleet-footed attacker, the Belgian can change direction in the blink of an eye to leave the defenders for dead and finish off a move with ice-cool composure.

The 24-year-old, who is an intelligent footballer with good tactical awareness, is also adept at creating chances for his teammates in the final third.

Raul Jimenez has shouldered Wolves’ goalscoring burden this term with 5 goals so far. But Jimenez has found little support from the likes of Jota, Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro and Adama Traore. As evident from Traore’s performances in the Premier League so far, he is not the finished product that Wolves would have expected when they splashed the money to secure his services from Middlesbrough.

Nuno simply cannot rely on his current attacking options if he wishes to make it to Europe in his first season in the Premier League. That’s where signing Trossard would make sense, as the Belgian can add that cutting edge to Nuno’s attack and help his team achieve a top-six finish.
