Stop The Lacklustre Summer – Three Things That Tottenham Should Do Before The Season Starts

Mauricio Pochettino has been one calm manager amidst the storm raging in the transfer window in the Premier League. It is not long before the clubs in the competition hit £1bn on incoming transfers this summer but the Spurs have kept their cool and are yet to make a single addition to their first team ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The manager is still quite cool and revealed that he is not panicking and is just looking to make a couple of signings but will that be enough for the London outfit to withstand the pressures next season. They are also in Europe and will need all the depth and quality they can accumulate but even then, Spurs are still not looking hot favourites for the title. Here are three things Pochettino needs to do before the deadline day, to make sure that they have a shot at the title next season as well.

Spend On An Established, Proven Winner

As many stars as Tottenham have in their attack, they lack a genuine world class name that can make heads turn. Though it is not a necessary requisite in itself, what it gives to the squad is often under-estimated. It improves the competition among the players along with added quality to the squad. It will improve the level of performances and if they find the right man, they may even go all the way next season.

Improve The Width In The Attack

Pochettino has a plethora of attackers at his disposal and though some of them are sure to improve next season, they do not have players who can run at full-backs at will. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Eric Lamela are the first choice and are not wingers, while Moussa Sissoko has proven undependable. Son Heung-min is the only genuine trustworthy winger in Tottenham’s ranks. A bit of width in the attack can help them break defences down better and if they add a pacey player, they will become close to unstoppable.

Decide On His Plan A

Most importantly, Pochettino must decide if he trusts the traditional 4-2-3-1 system or the 3-4-2-1 system – two plans he has executed randomly over the last couple of seasons. As seen last season, sticking to a three-man defence has its advantages but Pochettino’s squad is built for a 4-2-3-1 system, which could be more effective. A bit of versatility in formations is always good but shifting between them has proved ill-advised recently and it might be time for the Argentine to stick to one system and allow his side to settle down.
