Winter Transfer Window: Winners And Losers

The spending for this season in the transfer windows surpassed the £1 billion mark and truth be told it wasn’t really much of a surprise. The Premier League’s new TV deal has enabled even the clubs who aren’t considered to be top four material to spend large amounts and get the players they need.

Stoke certainly have risen up the ranks thanks to their new signings but also thanks to the philosophy of Mark Hughes. Certainly one of the most eye-catching deals of the winter window has to be that of Juan Iturbe on loan at Bournemouth, the Argentine was one of the brightest talents in the world but things haven’t gone right for him in the Serie A and now he has a chance to showcase his ability with Eddie Howe’s men.

The window certainly is a blessing for a few teams and an equal curse for a few others. We list out some of the winners and losers from this winter transfer window.

Winners

Newcastle United

One thing that Steve McClaren cannot complain about is the lack of funds at Newcastle. He again spent £29 million to get some big names in the club and if he can’t stave off relegation it would surely fall down to him. Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Seydou Doumbia certainly should provide enough firepower to score goals for the club but can their defence hold on till the end of the season?

Watford

Quique Sanchez Flores’ links with players from La Liga certainly helped him sign Mario Suarez who was brought from Fiorentina. The midfielder played under Flores at Atletico Madrid and despite interest from Valencia, he signed up with the Watford manager for a paltry figure of £4 million. Watford have also bolstered their side with Costel Pantilimon and Nordin Amrabat as new signings, they could help the team finish the season in the top half.

Norwich City

Another team trying to avoid the drop is Norwich City and the Canaries have surely invested wisely in the squad. Apart from signing Everton’s Steven Naismith, the club also put together shrewd deals for Patrick Bamford from Chelsea and Timm Klose from Wolfsburg. The signing of Matt Jarvis from West Ham could prove to be a great one as the winger does have a lot of quality and game time at Carrow Road would be the icing on the cake for him.

Losers

Manchester United

For all the talk about Manchester United signing Kroos, Neymar and the likes, this transfer window was an uneventful one for the Red Devils. Sure they brought back Adnan Januzaj from Borussia Dortmund but they needed to shore up other places and the only good thing they achieved this window was letting go of Victor Valdes to Standard Liege on loan albeit.

Aston Villa

It surely has been one of the worst seasons to date for the midlands side and it just seems to be getting worse. Aston Villa not only got rid of players such as Joe Cole, Gary Gardner, Tiago Ilori and Philippe Senderos but they brought in absolutely no one. If this is not a sign of them preparing for the Championship, we do not know what is. However, if Remi Garde can somehow save the Villains from the drop, he would be considered a hero.
