Manchester United vs Watford Report: Manchester United match report

Manchester United are now level on points with 3rd placed Tottenham Hotspur as they beat Javi Gracia’s Watford 2-1 in a tough game at Old Trafford.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first victory after being announced as the permanent Manchester United boss earlier this week. Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a consolation goal for the visitors in the 90th minute.

Watford started off the game brilliantly and dominated the game as the hosts struggled to string two passes together. Javi Gracia’s side had the first chance of the game in the 2nd minute when Gerard Deulofeu was set free on the right-hand side with Troy Deeney free in the centre but the Spaniard dwelled on the ball too long thereby wasting the opportunity.

Doucoure was the next one to have a chance but the Frenchman missed his shot from about 15 yards. Paul Pogba provided the first opening for the Red Devils after a brilliant pass set Rashford through on goal but a brilliant tackle from Kabasele denied the opportunity.

David de Gea was the first keeper to be tested as he got down brilliantly to deny Troy Deeney’s header from close range. The visitors continued to dominate the game but were stunned in the 29th minute.

Luke Shaw carries the ball from his own box before producing an incredible pass to find Rashford 1v1 with the goalkeeper and the youngster buried it to give United the lead against the run of play.

The goal boosted the hosts’ confidence as they started to impose themselves in the game. Anthony Martial had the next chance of the game from close range which he shot straight at Foster. It really should’ve been 2-0 there.

Both teams went in at the break after a pretty enthralling 45 minutes with United up by a goal to nil.

In the second half, Watford continued to control the game and United looked to play on the counter. Doucoure had a shot blocked by Shaw and the ball fell into the box where Deeney teed up Hughes, whose curled shot went just wide of the far post.

Watford were knocking on United’s door and a goal looked to have been coming but just like the first half, the hosts hit the Hornets against the run of play.

Anthony Martial made up for his earlier miss with a left-footed strike from close range to double United’s lead. It was just down to game management from there on for the Red Devils but had a scare at the end thanks to a goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure after some nice build-up play in the 90th minute.
