The world witnessed an extraordinary season of Barclays Premier League with fairy tales being scripted, big guns failing and most of all, the underdogs ringing the warning bells. Teams like Leicester, Tottenham, Southampton and West Ham have emerged playing splendid football, but none have impressed me more than Tottenham this season.
Indeed, they did bottle it up in the last stages of the league, but irrespective of how they finished what matters more is how they performed. Their football was laced with consistency, something that was compelling to the audience and intriguing at the same time. Also, along with all this, it was not only the youth policy of Pochettino that was unravelling itself at spurs, it was also the display of discipline and quality on several occasions. The more and more I expected Spurs to slip sooner or later, the more they went ahead and I think I don’t hesitate when I say that it won’t be long when this team will challenge for the title on a consistent basis and sooner rather than later, the premier league title might arrive at White Hart Lane.
I firmly believe Tottenham are challenging for the title again next season let alone the top four. They have that lingering passion, that determination and hunger that can spread a smile on any football fan’s face and moreover, they play football to excite. Harry Kane was termed as “ One season wonder” by many, but another stunning season for him where he scored over 20 goals saw Tottenham lead the scoring charts having scored 64 according to the statistics shown during the month of April. 449 chances were created while only 25 were conceded at the other end, something to boast about for sure!
Tottenham have a formidable squad and there are success stories everywhere around the pitch to prove that.
I see no reason for Pochettino to change this squad, but we’ve been asking certain questions all year and one important one is what happens if Harry Kane gets injured? Does Tottenham really have enough depth to cover up important places in case of emergencies?
Transfer rumors are like the seeds of a dandelion and they move away soon enough, but over time some rumors do gain strength. Tottenham have been heavily linked with Victor Wanyama of Southampton and their only proper backup is Ryan Mason in case any of the regular midfielders suffer from an injury or get banned. With Moussa Dembele suspended for over 5 matches, Tottenham do need a midfield and Wanyama won’t be a bad signing at all. The Kenyan International has enough Premier League experience and he boasts a passing accuracy of 82%. He’s won nearly 50% of average duels which is a pretty even stat for a holding midfielder and his average passing length touches 20 meters or so.
Apart from this, Tottenham do need a striker and the only player they’ve been strongly linked with is Batshuayi of Marseille who’s bound to move this summer. Batshuayi has scored 17 goals in 36 appearances and has created 27 chances. Batshuayi’s got pace and flair and his clinical nature will surely see him establish himself in the Premier League.
Tottenham have got a really solid squad and the thought of having qualified for Champions League will definitely raise their spirits although I see them leaving the tournament early on because I expect Pochettino to focus on the league just like how they did with Europa League. Tottenham haven’t got enough depth and no big names on the bench and hence it will be difficult to think highly in their maiden champions league campaign under Pochettino. On the other hand, one big positivity that remains is that the young guns will get exposure to competitive matches on grand nights such as the Champions League nights and squad rotations would help them to develop and proceed further.
To sum it all up, I see Tottenham challenging for the title again next season and their primary focus during the Transfer Period should be only on two positions and that is of the midfield and striker.
