Sheffield United have made a huge mistake letting go of David Brooks

Sheffield United have made a superb start to their Championship campaign and are currently 3rd after playing 16 games, just one point behind Leeds United and Norwich City. Chris Wilder’s men have racked up the second-most goals in the league this season after the Peacocks, scoring a total of 27 across their 16 games.

But in the summer, United sold Welsh midfielder David Brooks to Premier League outfit Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old joined the Vitality stadium on a four-year deal after scoring 3 goals in 30 appearances for the Championship outfit. (BBC)

Brooks has since gone on to make a bright start to life in the Premier League. The youngster has started all 10 games this season under Eddie Howe and has scored a total of 3 goals in that time. He certainly is flourishing as a central attacking midfielder in the manager’s 4-4-1-1 formation.

David Brooks

Sheffield United will definitely be made to rue their decision at this point. After spending ten years in Manchester City’s youth academy. Brooks moved to Sheffield’s academy for a year after which he was shifted into the senior side.

Given that the Blades are surely one of the favourites to make promotion next year, they have certainly made a grave mistake letting go of David Brooks. Not only would they have required the Welsh midfielder’s services this year, but should they make the climb, United are going to have probably face the star they once let go.

Granted Brooks wasn’t the most explosive player during his time at Sheffield, but he certainly possessed the potential which the world is witnessing at Bournemouth at the moment. He has averaged 2.1 shots per game and a pass success rate of 73% in the Premier League this season. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

Brooks is a versatile and technically astute footballer who will only get better as times goes on. Had the Blades held onto him, he would have provided a more cutting edge to them in the final third. Though strikers Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke have been good this season, with the former scoring a total of 10 goals in the league so far, both of them have crossed the age of 30.

Sheffield could definitely do with a youngster like David Brooks in the squad and now the club must invest in January. The Blades have definitely made a huge blunder in letting him go this summer.
