The Telegraph suggests that Tottenham are set to make a move for Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
After working together at Inter Milan, current Spurs boss Jose Mourinho signed him on a free transfer during his time at Manchester United, which turned out to be his first stint in the Premier League. Although Zlatan’s reputation as a goalscoring machine precedes him, he could not emulate his form at Old Trafford.
In his 56 games for the Red Devils, he scored only 29 times, which is quite low as per his standards. Injuries were also a major concern for him during his time at Old Trafford. After moving to LA Galaxy in 2018, Ibrahimovic scored plenty of goals but could not help his team win the MLS trophy.
On the other hand, Tottenham are placed 10th in the league. After sacking Mauricio Pochettino, they got back on track with a win against West Ham under Mourinho.
At 38, Ibrahimovic may not be the dynamic player he once was. Furthermore, the intensity of the Premier League would not suit him and as a result, it could burden a club that is trying to return to winning ways.
According to Telegraph, Ibrahimovic is seeking an 18-month deal with a European club. And Tottenham would be wise to avoid a move since they need something a little more long-term.
With Harry Kane’s elite status at the club, Ibrahimovic would not get frequent opportunities to start. This is exactly what Mourinho has mentioned in his interview too.
According to WhoScored, the Swede averaged 4.1 shots and 1.7 key passes per game for Manchester United in his first season but the next season saw a drastic downfall. He averaged a mere 0.8 shots, 0.4 key passes and no dribbles per game.
The numbers speak for themselves and with the growing demands of the English top-flight, Tottenham must stay away. In addition, after playing in the USA, he could take a lot more time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
If Tottenham want to find a replacement for Fernando Llorente, they must go for a younger striker with a long-term picture in mind.
